Michelle Wie was hoping to put her 2007 list of poor performances behind her and start with a healed wrist and some refreshed vigor in her game. But the Samsung World Championship doesn’t look like it will be the place that she does that.
Michelle started the day with two pars and a birdie to be 1 under through 3 holes. That quickly turned south as she went through several bogeys and double bogeys. Wie finished the day at 7 over par and in dead last place.
This poor performance in the first round won’t help the fact that her even being in the tournament has a black mark on it. She recieved a special exemption to the Samsung which is a tournament for the top money winners on the tour. She obviously wasn’t one of them, and she ended up bumping Natalie Gulbis from the tournament for the spot.
The good news is that there isn’t a cut in the tournament so she’ll have the whole weekend to prove that she belongs in this elite field. However, she does have a heap of work ahead of her to try and erase this first day.

Michelle Wie and her handlers continue their show of selfish, self serving behavior. Her golf abilities have never come close to living up to the hype. She could have shown a touch of class by giving her slot this week at the Samsung World Championship to a real golfer, Natalie Gulbis. Annika gracefully relinquished her special invite even though as one of the Top 10 in the world, she would have at least been competitive.
When will the PGA and LPGA stop pandering this princess? When she can compete, let her earn her way into the field. Until then, sit down.

I agree, she needs to take some time off to refocus on her golf game, play some tournaments that aren’t as big name. I think the big thing is if she leaves the big time tournaments will her image be worth as much? Can she get back to make $25,000,000 a year in endorsements if she takes a year off?
I believe yes but I’m not a sports agent or her parents.
