Michelle Wie has many fans and also many critics. Her biggest critics speak out around the week leading up to a men’s tournament. Next up on the critics slate is a stop on the men’s European Tour.
Of playing in men’s events Michelle Wie said “I feel an adrenaline rush when I play
these events and it is a lot of fun.” Those are some big words after finding herself having to bow out of her most recent attempt at making the cut on the PGA tour from sufferring heat exhaustion. That doesn’t sound like fun at all.
But you have to give the 16 year old from Hawaii credit. She’s not backing down, and she’s not letting her father do the talking for her (or agent, note the recent release of her caddie by her agent rather than herself.) Michelle Wie is standing up for her chance to play in the men’s tournament and she’s even gone as far as saying that she wants to play on the Ryder Cup team.
Playing on the Ryder Cup team would mean she would have to be a regular fixture on the men’s tour, rather than the women’s tour. She would need to play enough events to even qualify for the running, and then would need to finish high enough in each event let alone make the cut. (I don’t think anyone would allow a sponsors exemption to play on one of the most prestigious teams in golf.)
But she’s not backing down from her critics now and as far as we can tell, MIchelle Wie wants to play against the men more often than playing against the women. If Wie becomes a regular on the men’s tour she’ll most definitely have to start earning her way on the tour rather than getting exemptions. Several players, including Adam Scott and Michael Campbell have voiced their opinions that Wie should win on the men’s tour first before playing on the PGA tour.
