Michelle Wie fought til the very end of the 36 hole day at Newport Country Club in Newport, RI. This years US Women’s Open finished with the third and fourth round played on Sunday due to a fog delay on the first scheduled day of play. The women lasted through the weekend and almost finished up in style.
I say almost because Pat Hurst and Annika Sorenstam will start their playoff round at 9am eastern time Monday morning as they both finished at even par for the day. Pat Hurst rallied on the last hole with a 30+ yard putt to within 5 feet of the cup, followed up by a straight shot to the hole for a par.
Michelle Wie played very impressively Sunday posting a 71 and 73 for her final two rounds. Michelle Wie slid early in her fourth round with 2 bogeys on the front nine, and one on the back before finishing with 5 straight pars. Her putting seemed to be on today as she read most of her putts alone during the final round including 4 of her last 5 par putting excursions.
Michelle Wie at only 16 was looking to become the youngest majors champion in golf on both the PGA and LPGA. She came up short but played with poise of a tour veteran. In a post play interview she seemed happy with her play and with her 3 place finish where she finished with 2 other players. She will look to improve as the season moves on and who knows, maybe we’ll see her making the cut on the men’s tour soon.
